Skin Tag Removal

WHAT IS SKIN TAG?

A skin tag, medically known as acrochordon, is a small, soft, benign growth of skin that typically appears as a flap or tag. These growths are usually flesh-colored and can vary in size. Acrochordons are loose collagen fibers that become lodged inside thicker areas of the skin.

What causes skin tags?

Skin tags are often found in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, or groin. They are harmless and can be left alone, but some people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated or bothersome.

Differences between skin tags, warts and moles:

  • Skin tags can sometimes be confused with warts or moles, but they are different.

  • Warts are more commonly found on the hands and feet. Most warts are firm, raised off the skin and have a rough surface.

  • Moles are usually found on areas of skin exposed to the sun. They are usually a different colour to the rest of your skin and can be pink, light brown, brown or darker brown depending on the colour of your skin tone. Moles are usually flat and round or oval.

Many methods are available for skin tag removal

Skin tag removal is a routine procedure we perform with precision and care. We provide a range of effective methods, all carried out in a safe and controlled environment.

  • Cauterization. Your doctor uses heat to remove the skin tag.

  • Cryosurgery. Your doctor sprays a small amount of liquid nitrogen over the skin tag, which freezes off the growth.

  • Electrocautery. You doctor could also burn the skin tag off with a specialized electric current.

  • Ligation. Skin tags can sometimes be removed by cutting off the blood flow with surgical thread.

  • Surgery. This simply involves your doctor snipping off the skin tag at its base with surgical scissors. The size and location of the skin tag will determine the need for bandages or stitches.

Removal aftercare tips:

Infections and complications don’t usually occur with skin tag removal, but is possible. Post care instructions may include keeping the wound dry for at least 48 hours and then gently washing the area with soap and water.

Removing skin tags can cause scarring or darken skin (hyperpigmentation) where the skin tag was, particularly on black or brown skin. These effects are usually temporary, although it can sometimes be permanent.

Home remedies for skin tag removal are largely unproven:

While home remedies are available, their efficacy is largely anecdotal and not supported by significant data. Some commercial kits contain ligation bands that can be placed around the base of skin tags, thereby cutting off their circulation and causing them to fall off. Home “freezing” kits are also available, but typically require multiple applications. Tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar have also reportedly been used to treat skin tags; however, there is little research data to support their effectiveness. Furthermore, these substances often cause skin irritation. Tea tree oil, in particular, is known to cause allergic skin reactions in some people.

Peace of mind by visiting a clinic:

Skin tags come in many shapes and sizes, so you may mistake a wart or even a skin cancer for a skin tag. Sometimes, what may look like a skin tag could actually be a different type of skin growth. If you notice a fleshy growth that has features that are not typical of skin tags, such as variations in color, sudden changes in size, or areas of bleeding or pain, ask your doctor to take a look.
